The 4th of July UC Celebration Planning Committee is ready to bring our community another great Independence Day celebration!
Register now for the 5K Run/Walk through Standley Park. You can find the registration form on page 9 of the June newsletter. You’ll get a race t-shirt as well as one free Pancake Breakfast Ticket! This is a USA Track & Field-sanctioned event for serious runners as well as “average joes”. After the race, head over to the Pancake Breakfast for pancakes, and sausages. Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Cost is $5 per person, $3 for seniors over 70, and free for children 5 and under. All proceeds will support the many events and projects sponsored by the University City Community Association.
On-stage entertainment begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes live music, Polynesian dancing, and a karate demonstration. From 5:00 to p.m., 7:00 jump up and dance to the sound of rock and dance music cover band Rockstreet! Show your 4th of July spirit by decorating your bike and/or pet! The Bike Parade and first-time Pet Parade step off from Standley Middle School at 11:00 a.m., led by the Standley Middle School Marching Band. Line up at the school at 10:30 so you don’t miss out! (Pets must be on a leash.) Another cool event is the Photo Scavenger Hunt. Register at the park by 11:45 so you can join the fun, which starts at 12:00 noon. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., browse vendor booths and the Book Barn. Other activities to check out during the afternoon include a rock wall, dunk tank pony rides, and “jumpies”. Food will be available throughout the day, as will the Beer Garden.

President’s Report
Andy Freeburn, President
University City Community Association
Second ever newsletter in color at your doorsteps this June!
Mason Dixon Canyon For years the University City Community Association has tried to unify with our “Northern Brothers”, who may wish to be aligned with affluent La Jolla than Mayberry on Governor Drive. When one of us “Southerners” mentions the name of our community to most outsiders, they often confuse us with University Heights until we say the more readily identifiable moniker of “UTC.”
Visions of the shopping mall, high rise buildings, and condominium clusters come to mind. It’s true that we “Southerners” are proud of our slower and sequestered life style with focus on family traditions.
However, we’ve always welcomed friendly strangers at community events with a good dose of hospitality. All factions of University City are equally represented on the University City Planning Group but to the best of my knowledge there are no other groups which contain representatives from both sides of Rose Canyon.
While I understand north UC has fewer school aged children, more university students, and single professionals than south UC, I believe the summer concerts and UC Celebration are events which everyone could enjoy and participate in.
As the UCCA prepares to help with the many summer events, I invite our “Northern Neighbors” to participate in the planning and the performing. Without interaction between the two “sides,” University City truly will be a “House Divided.”
Thank you for supporting University City!
