University Community library programs for children
The University Community Branch Library now offers free, fun, weekly story times and crafts in three formats to help foster reading skills, creativity, communication skills and coordination control in toddlers and preschool age children. Parents are invited to share some high quality time with their preschoolers at the library. The traditional preschool story time for children ages three to six years old is on Tuesday mornings at 11:00 am.
For those patrons who cannot make the Tuesday morning story time, the library has added a Monday evening pajama signing story time for toddlers. This program makes use of hand signing skills, sings and leads movement activities in a half-hour performance. Using hand signing has been shown to improve communication skills in the very young.
In addition, the library offers a third story time opportunity which is a Spanish language story time on every Saturday at noon. This program also includes readings, songs, movement activities and crafts.
The summer reading program starts by med-June and runs till mid-August. Children age 0 to 10 get prizes for 10 books read and those aged 13 to 18 get prizes for 4 books read.
